CAMP SHALOM 2009
Frequently Asked Questions
1. My child is not Jewish. Can he/she attend Camp Shalom? YES! Our campers come from many different backgrounds and religious traditions. Everyone is welcome. We urge you to call our office if you have any concerns.
2. What type of staff members are employed by Camp Shalom? Camp Shalom staff members come from a variety of backgrounds and include everyone from students and teachers to athletes and folks who are specialists in their field. Specialists may very from camp to camp, but our camp staff is here for the entire summer to help make your child's experience as fun as it can be. With over 80% of our staff returning from last year, Camp Shalom 2009 is sure to be our best camp yet.
3. What is a dairy/kosher lunch? As a Jewish institution, Camp Shalom does honor kosher dietary laws. In the simplest of terms, kosher means no meat, poultry, or shellfish is allowed. However, there is still plenty of room for fun and healthy camp lunches. From tuna fish and peanut butter and jelly to cheese pizza and all fruits and vegetables, your parent's manual will provide a list of fun and healthy lunch options!
4. What if my camper comes with a non-kosher lunch? A kosher lunch will be prepared for them and the non-kosher portion of the lunch will be stored and returned to the parents at the end of the camp day.
5. Is before and after care available? Yes. As a service to our parents, we do offer before care (from 7:30 until 9:00) and after care (from 4:00 until 5:30). Simply indicate on your enrollment form which days and times you'll need and we'll be happy to help accommodate you.
6. My camper has a special dietary or medical condition. Can he/she still attend Camp Shalom? Of course. On your registration form, simply indicate clearly what your camper's condition and/or needs are and we'll do everything possible to ensure your camper has a great summer experience.
7. What if my child misbehaves at Camp Shalom? In the event of a behavioral issue with a camper, the parents will be contacted immediately and notified of the situation. At Camp Shalom, we realize kids will be kids and we encourage kids to truly act their age. However, if a camper were to become a safety issue (either to himself or other campers), we'll meet with the parents to determine the best course of action. In addition, even if it is just a minor matter, parents will be notified so that they may be informed with regard to any behavioral issues.
8. How long has Camp Shalom been around? Over three decades! Camp Shalom has ran continuously since our first session in 1972.
9. Are tours of Camp Shalom available? They certainly are. Simply e-mail or call us at 918-495-1111 to arrange a tour of Camp Shalom and our facilities. Operating hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
10. Are parents allowed to visit Camp Shalom? Certainly. In fact, parents are encouraged to stop by from time to time to see how their camper is doing. We simply ask that all visitors check in at the receptionist's desk. A staff member will arrive momentarily. If coming around lunch time, please bring your own kosher lunch or let the staff member know you do not have a kosher lunch. One will be made for you so you can eat with your camper.
11. What if I have a problem with another camper at Camp Shalom? Any problems with campers, staff members, or programming should be reported to the camper director immediately. All issues will be addressed with the appropriate party.
12. Are Camp Shalom staff members safety certified? All Camp Shalom staff members are trained and certified in first aid, CPR, infant CPR, and AED training. In addition, a large portion of our staff is water safety certified and certified as lifeguards. All Camp Shalom staff members must complete an orientation prior to the start of camp and all staff members must complete a safety screen, background check, and drug test prior to employment.
13. Can I request that my camper be grouped with another camper? Camp Shalom tries to meet all grouping and assignment requests. However, because of staffing, budgeting, and programming issues, we may not always be able to meet your request. However, we still encourage you to make the request. Simply e-mail us and let us know what your request is.
14. What if I have a question not listed in the FAQ page? If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Camp Shalom office.
